Asa was already waiting for her in their secluded spot near the ferry terminal. Gaia’s heart swelled with joy when she saw his smile. “Hey, beautiful.”

“Hey, my love.”

Their kiss was all too brief, but so sweet she could cry. His eyes were soft on hers. “I missed you.”

Gaia grinned at him, even though inside, she was a melting mess of goo. “We are sickening.”

“Aren’t we?” Asa grinned and lifted her into his arms. “Ready?”

“Ready?”

This time, as Asa sped across the water, Gaia tried to concentrate on the images around her. Bad idea. Motion sickness got her and, by the time they reached the lab and Asa set her on her feet, nausea roiled up inside her and, much to her embarrassment, she threw up. “Oh, god.”

Asa rubbed her back. “It’s okay, sweetling, I’m surprised it’s taken this long for this to happen.”

They went inside, and Asa helped her rinse her mouth out with cold water. Gaia went to the bathroom where a fresh toothbrush and a tube of toothpaste waited for her. “Mind-readers.”

“Not really.”

She started as she saw Jae sitting on the windowsill. He grinned at her. “We assumed you might be spending some nights here, so we got some human supplies in.”

Gaia eyed him amused. “Privacy isn’t really your thing, is it, Jae?”

“Sorry.” He hopped off the windowsill. “I risked it, knowing all you were doing is brushing your teeth.”

Gaia shrugged. She really didn’t mind. Jae came to her side, and she hugged him, hard. The connection she felt for the twins was so utterly real—she just wished she knew what it was.

Back in the lab, she hugged Yoon and Eshe hello and smiled a greeting at Sasha. He introduced her to Pollo, who took Gaia’s hands. They stared at each other for the longest time. As Pollo’s voice echoed in her head, Gaia smiled and nodded. She put her palm against his cold, hard cheek. “Hello, Pollo.”

“And this is Mannon.”

A petite woman came into the room then, her long dark dreadlocks pulled back behind her, and a top hat shoved over them. She wore a long red velvet coat, with her hand shoved deeply into the pockets. She nodded at Gaia, but her eyes were cold. Gaia felt a little thrill of shock. This vampire wasn’t easily won over. She tried to smile at Mannon, then realize the air behind the woman was shifting and flexing, like when she had seen the angel down on the pier. Mannon was clearly something different from the other vampires in the room.

Mannon seemed to sense her scrutiny, and her eyes narrowed at Gaia.

Asa seemed to notice the change in atmosphere and steered Gaia into one of the labs. “Okay, so let’s get to work. Yoon told me about the DNA thing.”

“Yeah,” Gaia grinned at him, “I can’t believe you didn’t think of it.”

“To be honest, I dismissed it. What could it possible tell us? Our venom is pretty standard across the board—at least, the effect it has on people who get bitten.
